Kids are always curious. Their minds wander from one thought to the other. They always ask questions about everything they hear or see. Kids usually learn something very quickly. How to help a child struggling with reading?

If your kid is straddling to read, you can help them by following some of the procedures –

  • Identify the root of the problem:

Before giving any instruction, find out where their confusion begins. Research has shown that 85-90% of learners struggling with reading lack phonological and phonemic awareness.

  • Make them confident:

Most struggling readers understand that reading is confusing to them. Hence, they feel frustrated, and their confidence level goes down. To raise their confidence, you should give them books at their level, even if the standard is low.

  • Don’t wait for them to read:

Struggling readers find it difficult to read between the lines. They get stuck in phonics, spelling, reading, or comprehension. So you have to split your teaching techniques into small portions and show them every step.

  • Give them time to practice:

You cannot expect struggling readers to cope with you once you show them the techniques. You have to wait with patience until they practice with trial and error.

  • Multi-sensory teachings:

The most effective way of teaching a struggling reader is to integrate visual, kinaesthetic, and auditory activities. This helps the learners to use their multiple senses, and reading becomes more natural.

  1. How to teach a 6-year-old child to read?

You can help your 6-year-old child to read with short and easy books. You can also add activities like writing and re-reading.

  • Book selection:

Let your child decide which books they want to read. But also help them select by going through the book cover, pages, and back.

  • Pointing while reading:

Use fingers or reading pointers to point the words you are reading to your child. Help your child to do the same as well.

  • Reread:

It is seen that children gain confidence when they read familiar books more than once. Let them reread those books as practice will make them more confident. Their skills will also develop.
