Albano-Waite Tarot Deck Review & Guide

Tarot Card Meaning

The Alban and Waite tarot decks are two of the most respected decks in tarot history. It’s easy to see why: the decks feature beautiful and intricate back designs, and they are sturdy and well-made. The Alban deck features cards nearly as tall as they are wide, while the Waite deck, created by illustrator Thoth Tarot, has shorter and wider cards than they are tall. Both decks have gorgeous artwork, though some people prefer one or the other.

Author

This deck was created by the author Frankie Albano and the illustrator Colman Smith.

Albano-Waite Tarot Deck Review

Frankie Albano added vibrant colors to Pamela Colman Smith’s artwork. The deck was released in 1968 and went out of print a few years later because there was enough demand for it. U.S. Games Systems re-issued a facsimile original deck in 1991 and has remained a staple for tarot collectors ever since.

The colors are vibrant, with a lot of purples and greens, which helps readers focus on details they might have missed otherwise. The Minor Arcana’s backgrounds are color-coded. The Cups are a light blue-green, the Wands are orange, the Pentacles are lime green, and the Swords are yellow.

In conclusion, the illustrations are gorgeous, and the deck is beautiful. But I’ve always found tarot to be a confusion of symbols, and I believe that tarot should be read for emotional and spiritual guidance, while the meanings are more interpretive than direct. Overall, I’d still recommend the Albano-Waite deck for its art, but I’d rather spend my money on a deck that helps me connect with my grandmother.
