As part of my work in the Bangladesh Mental Health sector, I frequently work with people struggling with their mental health. Many of them are in a very desperate situation and are unaware of any way out. Others cannot accurately describe the problem they are having, so it is hard to determine where to start. Also, Bangladesh Mental Hospitals have a shortage compared to mental health-seeking people.
Mental Health Condition in Bangladesh:
In a country like Bangladesh, the mental healthcare industry is largely unorganized. However, making the right connection with the right people can help you find the right people to help you. If you can find the right people at the right places, then you can make huge strides in the right direction to find the right treatment.
- Bangladesh Mental Hospitals indicates the psychiatric facilities in Bangladesh. These hospitals provide specialized treatment to the mentally ill, located in Dhaka, Chittagong, Pabna, Khulna, and Sylhet.
- The Ministry of Health governs mental hospitals. The Department of Psychiatry is a part of the medical faculty. The other departments are the Department of Social Medicine, the Department of Forensic Medicine, and the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine.
- Indigent patients are treated free of cost, and the charges are nominal for paying patients.
- Due to a lack of awareness and poverty, there have various stigmas.
Stigma and Discrimination in Mental Health in Bangladesh:
Mental health problems are a reality in many people’s lives every day. While it is true that not all mental health problems are created equally, there are still discrimination and stigma issues that need to be addressed. In addition, mental health problems vary widely in severity, making it difficult for people to understand how to best support themselves.
However, there are some common concerns about mental illness—such as whether a person is “crazy” and if they should be locked up—that all people who struggle with mental illness are forced to deal with.
Some people do not aggress to take their mental health support from professional psychiatrists or psychologists. Rather they take treatment from “OJJA.” This is because they believe Jinn and Pori make their unhealthy condition.
Stigma and discrimination against mental health affect the lives of millions of people worldwide, but there is limited research into how it affects these individuals. As a healthcare provider, my goal is to contribute to this research by exploring how stigma and discrimination affect my patients’ mental health.
History of Bangladesh Mental Hospital:
The Dhaka Mental Hospital, founded in 1875, is the oldest in Dhaka. It was set up as a place to provide mental health care in the country but has been renamed several times and, at one time, was called the Dhaka Lunatic Asylum. The story of the Dhaka Lunatic Asylum goes back to 1873 when the British took over the Presidency of Bengal and Dhaka was made the capital of the new province.
Now, most Bangladeshi people know that Pabna mental hospital is the only specialized in treating mental illnesses people. But there are available mental health treatment centers in Bangladesh, most of them situated in Dhaka.
Today, there are various mental hospitals in Bangladesh. At the end of this article, we have provided a list of mental health hospitals.
Mental Health Care Facilities in Bangladesh:
As per the Cost of Living in Bangladesh, Bangladesh’s list of health care facilities is as follows. It consists of Hospitals, Clinics, Nursing Homes, Medical Stores, Pharmacies, Dental Colleges, Nursing Institutes, and other facilities.
Healthcare facilities across Bangladesh are interested in increasing their customer base and maintaining good health.
Mental health care facilities provide a wide range of services to individuals with mental health issues, including physical health care, occupational therapy, speech therapy, traumatic brain injury services, and many others. Therefore, mental health care facilities must adhere to the regulatory authority’s rules and regulations that govern their type of facility.
For mental health care facilities, buildings or groups of buildings or apartments are used primarily for the hospitalization and treatment of patients with psychological problems, such as schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, major depression, bipolar disorder, panic attacks, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Who Can Come to a Mental Hospital:
Mental health is essential for our existence, but it is a largely misunderstood subject. In the United States, 1 in 5 adults has a diagnosable mental illness, yet only 10% receive treatment. For this reason, many have taken to the internet to raise awareness of mental health and advocate for equality of mental health.
People who need treatment often find themselves at a mental hospital or similar institution. But what sort of people are allowed to come to mental hospitals?
People who are vulnerable to their mental illness or suffering from severe mental issues like schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar mood disorder, etc., can take mental health services by staying at the rehabilitation center or hospital. Also, people suffering from less severe mental illnesses like anxiety, phobia, depression, PTSD, tension, pressure, etc., can take regular psychological treatment.
Originally, mental hospitals were places where the mentally ill were sent for treatment and rehabilitation. They were designed to be places of safety, security, and comfort. Today, they are often the last place the mentally ill want to go.
The reasons for this are varied: some patients are scared of the place, some don’t want to be treated, and others are not ready to take their medication. So the question is if the mentally ill want to get better, why are they not able to?
